Legend has it that this ditty was written by Sergeant Ned Botwood of the 47th Regiment of Foot, before he was killed in the assault at Montmorency during Wolfe’s Quebec campaign in 1759. However, the only mention of Sergeant Botwood in the historical record is in the issue of Rivington’s New York Gazette in which the song is first printed in 1774.
