1741. Regiment Update. The Regiment is raised in Scotland by then Colonel (General) Sir John Mordaunt (1697-1780) as Sir John Mordaunt’s Regiment of Foot in 1741. The newly-raised Mordaunt’s Regiment, which later became the 47th Foot (and then 1st Loyals), assembles for the first time on January 26, 1741 at Musselburgh, near Edinburgh. This portrait is of General Sir John Mordaunt, who first raised the regiment which would become the 47th Foot (and then 1st Loyals).
